Where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is required, an effective respiratory protection program must be implemented and maintained. Fit testing is a mandatory requirement for all tight-fitting respirator users in accordance with AS/NZS 1715:2009 and ISO 16975-3.
Under the WHS Act, Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBUs) have a duty of care to ensure workers are provided with safe systems of work, including suitable and properly fitted RPE. Fit testing is a critical part of meeting these obligations and demonstrating due diligence in protecting workers from airborne hazards.
Properly fitted respirators play a critical role in protecting workers from hazardous airborne contaminants. Even the highest-quality masks can fail to provide adequate protection if they don’t fit correctly – making fit testing an essential part of workplace safety.

What is ‘fit testing’?
Why is fit testing important?
There are two primary reasons for fit testing:
- Verification of training – checks whether the person has learned to don, doff a respirator without assistance
- Sizing – verifies that the selected make, model and size of a tight-fitting respirator adequately fits the wearer
Is fit testing a legal requirement?
Yes. Persons Conducting Business or Undertaking (PCBUs) must provide suitable RPE and ensure it is used correctly. Fit testing is required for tight-fitting respirators to meet this obligation.
How often should fit testing be done?
It is recommended fit testing be done at least annually, or when there are changes (e.g. weight, facial structure, new respirator). This aligns with AS/NZS ISO 16975.3:2023 and WHS requirements to maintain suitable RPE.
What can affect a successful fit test?
Factors such as facial hair, incorrect sizing, or poor positioning can cause failure. Facial hair is not permitted where it interferes with the seal.
