Prerequisites & Course Requirements

  • Persons must be 18 years of age or older
  • Photo ID must be presented i.e. current drivers licence, passport or proof of age card.
  • Basic numeracy skills.
  • Basic English language and literacy
  • USI Number
  • Appropriate clothing (Hi Vis shirt, long pants, with steel cap boots)

How Is the Course Delivered?

We offer flexible training options to suit different levels of experience:

2 Day Course – Beginner Pathway

  • Designed for participants with little or no prior experience operating a skid steer loader.

  • Includes extra time for hands-on practice, confidence building, and support with theory.

  • Day 1: Classroom theory, safety, and introduction to machine operation.

  • Day 2: Practical training, advanced operating techniques, and assessment.

1 Day Course – Experienced Operator Pathway

  • Designed for participants who have previous experience operating a skid steer loader and are looking to gain formal certification.

  • Focuses on refining existing skills, covering required theory, and completing assessment.

  • Morning: Knowledge review and refresher.

  • Afternoon: Practical assessment.

What Will You Learn?

Worksite Preparation

  • How to plan and prepare for skid steer loader operations

  • Reading and understanding work instructions and site safety requirements

  • Conducting site hazard assessments and applying risk controls

Machine Knowledge

  • Components and functions of a skid steer loader

  • Pre-start checks and routine maintenance

  • Identifying and reporting faults or hazards

Safe Operation

  • Starting, maneuvering, and shutting down the machine safely

  • Lifting, carrying, and placing loads

  • Backfilling, leveling, and site clean-up techniques

  • Working around other machinery and personnel

Practical Skills

  • Operating on different terrains and conditions

  • Correct use of attachments (e.g., bucket, forks, auger)

  • Loading/unloading equipment for transport

Workplace Safety & Compliance

  • Following WHS/OHS procedures and site policies

  • Communication with spotters and other workers

  • Emergency procedures and response

Finalisation of Operations

  • Machine shut down and securing procedures

  • Cleaning and storing tools and equipment

  • Completing basic maintenance records and documentation

Course Structure and Assessment

Participants are assessed using a combination of methods to confirm both knowledge and practical competence:

  • Knowledge Assessment

    • Written or verbal questions to check understanding of legislation, safety, and operating procedures.

  • Practical Assessment

    • Demonstrating correct machine pre-start, operation, maneuvering, load handling, and shut down.

    • Applying safe work practices in line with workplace procedures and site conditions.

To be deemed competent, participants must successfully complete all theory and practical assessment tasks to the standard required by the unit of competency.

Licensing and Certification

Upon successful completion of this unit, participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for:

RIIMPO318F- Conduct Civil Construction Skid Steer Loader Operations course is available for $500

Please note:

High Risk Training Academy (HRTA), deliver and assess this course under a third-party agreement with AOTA RTO #91463.

Certificates are issued by AOTA Training after all documentation has been submitted and course fees paid. AOTA issue your certificate upon successful completion of your course, typically within 7-10 days.
