What Will You Learn?

• Planning the Task: Confirm task requirements. Confirm surface condition for ground suitability for operational use of the non slew crane. Non-Slew crane capacity and lifting gear are established for the load and work requirements. Appropriate assessment of the path for operating the non-slew crane and moving and placing loads are assessed. Relevant hazards are identified with risk controls. Traffic management plans are implemented. Appropriate communication are tested and confirmed. All tasks and information are confirmed in accordance to lift plan.
• Prepare for work/task: Consultation with workplace personnel is established and maintained to ensure lift plan is clear. Verify risk controls for hazards. Carry out pre start checks and report any defects. Mobile crane is set up correctly with any lifting gear in accordance with lift plan. Fly jib (if fitted) is set up as required. Conduct Operational Checks and report and defects. Crane logbook is checked to confirm current compliance. Weather and work environment conditions are assessed to determine any impact on mobile crane operations. Weight of load is identified, calculated or estimated.Derated WLL of lifting equipment resulting from selected slinging techniques is calculated. Suitable lifting points and slinging techniques are identified. Lifting equipment and gear are prepared for safe use. Load destination is confirmed.
• Perform work/task: Lifts are determined within the Rated Capacity of the non-slewing mobile crane. Boom/jib and hook block are safely positioned over the load following directions. Lifting equipment and gear, where required, are connected to the load and used safely. Test lift is carried out. Loads are transferred using relevant crane movements and tag lines. Load and crane movement is monitored constantly. All communication signals are followed. Load is lowered and landed safely. Lifting gear is disconnected from load and crane is positioned safely. Lifting equipment and gear are inspected for defects.
• Prepare to drive an articulated mobile crane: Any items on the crane body are safely and effectively restrained and loose components are stored in storage areas. Pre-operational checks, including registrations and approvals, are completed for driving according. Tyre pressures and suspension settings are checked and set for driving and counterweights are positioned for road travel. Boom and fall block are positioned for driving. Appropriate signage, lights and equipment are checked for conformity to prescribed traffic regulations.
• Drive an articulated mobile crane: Articulated mobile crane is started, steered, manoeuvred, positioned and stopped in accordance with regulations. Steering is maintained utilising ‘turn-in-turn-out’. One-handed steering techniques are applied. Braking system of articulated mobile crane is managed and operated efficiently to ensure effective control of vehicle . Driving hazards are identified and/or anticipated and avoided .
• Pack Up: Crane boom/jib, lifting gear and associated equipment are stowed and secured. Relevant motion locks and brakes are applied. Crane is shut down and secured to prevent unauthorised access. Post-operational crane checks are carried out
